Here's a view of one of the single IR-LED towers located on the same Louisiana Central staging track seen in the previous photo.  If you look closely, you can see the top of the photo-transistor between two ties (the small blue dome).  When a piece of rolling stock rolls below the tower, the light beam seen by the photo-transistor is broken, and an LED will illuminate on a panel located on the fascia nearby.  Depending on the track and location, there are either two or three sensors near the end of a given track so the engineer knows when he must slow, then stop.
